Ghazal Khazana

Khazana, the festival of Ghazals was held on 30th & 31st July 2010 in Aid of Cancer Patients Aid Association & Parents Association Thalessmic Trust. In its eighth year this time, Khazana, was dedicated to legendary singer Talat Mahmood. Ghazal maestros like Pankaj Udhas, Talat Aziz, Anup Jalota, Shujaat Khan, Kavita Seth, Rajendra Mehta, Pt.Ajay Pohankar, Abhijit Pohankar, Madhushree, Suhel Rais Khan, Khushboo Khanam, Ahmed Hussain & Mohd.Hussain and Hari Haran performed at this two day musical extravaganza. This house-full event was a resounding success.  Special sponsors of the event were Union Bank Of India, U.B.Group (Spirits) & The Oberoi Hotel.

Our regular Breast Cancer Support group was held at MIG Club(Bandra) on 30th July. A yoga session was held by expert Nishu Singh to educate survivors on helpful yoga exercises and breathing tips.

On 7th and 14th August 'Body communication workshops' were conducted for childhood cancer patients at The Radio Club(Mumbai)by Mr Pratik Motwani as a part of the monthly Childhood cancer support group meetings. Mr. Motwani (San Francisco, USA) along-with Ms. Meagan performed a interactive clown show followed by entertaining games for these children.

A mega camp was organized at Pawapuri CHS Ltd for 200 individuals, on 8th August. Actress Ms. Poonam Dhillon was invited as the Chief Guest.

The 2010 World Cancer Congress was held on August 18 - 21 in Shenzhen, China. It was organized by the International Union Against Cancer, along with its hosts, the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association and the Chinese Medical Association. It focused on primary prevention, screening and early detection, treatment and management, supportive care, end of life, as well as on how programmes, infrastructures and resources are integrated into existing delivery systems. CPAA's Y K Sapru (Chairman & CEO), Mrs. Rekha Sapru (Joint Secretary ) and Ms. Veena Shukla (Social worker) were amongst the 3,222 delegates who were offered the unique opportunity to join Asian and International peers and colleagues in cancer control to learn, exchange knowledge and best practices and to network. Veena Shukla made a presentation on the topic 'Emotional difficulties experienced by childhood cancer patients’ siblings'. Piali Syam and Dr. Shital Raval's posters entitled 'Effective branding and marketing through fundraising activities' and 'Tobacco Habits of School Children in Mumbai ' respectively were also displayed at the poster exhibition center.

An interactive book entitled 'Victory over Cancer-Surabhi's Campaign' was released on 20th August. This book tackles the issues of childhood cancers, especially solid tumours. It has been created with the active participation and encouragement of Dr. Sushmita Bhatnagar, Anagha Nigwekar, Preeti Khicha, Nilesh Naik and Shekhar Saple. An article on Cancer Patients Aid Association and its activities, by Mrs. Neeta More was published in the Health Column of Maitrin Magazine (August Edition).

Delhi Branch

Health Detection Camp: CPAA in collaboration with Intas Pharmaceuticals conducted two Health detection camps in the month of August. The first camp was exclusively organized for the women from the Muslim community in Zakir Nagar on the 3rd Aug. This camp was attended by 50 women. The second camp was organized at SOS village on the 20th Aug, which was attended by 150 women, children and men. Intas plans to sponsor many such camps throughout the year.

Independence Day celebration at the Rajgarhia Dharamshala: This year, yet again, CPAA’s children came forward and planned an interesting program for Independence Day celebrations. Two volunteers, Vandy and Arrow from Kamla Nehru College gave special dance classes to our cancer patients (children). Rahul, Sunny, Gulshan, Gunjan, Jyoti and Pinky presented a dance on the famous number “Rang De Basanti”. The evening program was attended by Dr Paul (HOD Pediatrics) and Dr. Rachana from the Onco division at AIIMS hospital. All the children enjoyed the foot tapping number and sang Sare Jahaan se Achaa. Later on a drawing competition was also organized at the Rajgarhia Dhamashala and gifts were given to the best three paintings along-with consolation prizes to all other participants. Sweets and juices were distributed and all the children had a great time.

Pinktober 2010 Hard Rock’s signature Breast Cancer Awareness program, embarks on its 11th consecutive year of raising awareness and funds for breast cancer charities around the globe. Hard Rock Café outlets in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Pune and Hyderabad will donate proceeds from their month long charity efforts to the Cancer Patients Aid Association(CPAA).

CPAA will conduct a Breast Cancer Awareness meet followed by fun-filled afternoon and lunch on on 27th October 2010, 11 am onwards at Hard Rock Café, Mumbai.
