Face to Face - Innovations in Cancer Diagnostics, Therapeutics and Care
CPAA and Biocon organised a 'Face to Face' meeting with leaders in
the field of cancer to spark a debate on the utility of various
developments in the field of cancer, on 4th December 2010.
Dr. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chairman,
Biocon Limited, Syngene International Limited and Clinigene
International Limited, Dr. Rajendra Badwe, Director, Tata Memorial Hospital, Dr. Tapan Saikia,
Head of Medical Oncology, Prince Aly Khan Hospital and Transplant
Physician at Jaslok Hospital, Dr Nagraj Huilgol, Chief of Radiation
Oncology, Nanavati Hospital made thought provoking presentations. |

On
the occasion of
Children's Day, CPAA and Pawan Hans Helicopters Limited
organized a joy-ride for childhood cancer patients. Mr. Yash Birla,
Chairman, The Yash Birla Group, actress Ms. Tanushree Dutta
and Ms. Kalpana Malvia, runner-up Gladrags Mega Model Manhunt
2009 celebrated the day with 18 children and their family members.
CPAA
and Mahindra Tractors, Kandivali organized an Open Forum on
Breast and Cervical Cancers for the staff members of Mahindra &
Mahindra Limited as well as the general public on 9th December at
Kandivali. Dr. Mandakini Purandare, Gynaecologist, Dr. Mandar Nadkarni,
Onco-surgeon, Mrs. Neeta More, Director, CPAA and Mrs. Suvrata Gharge,
Manager, Mahindra Tractors were the speakers at this forum, designed to
raise awareness.
Well known actresses, Ms. Sukanya Kulkarni-Mone, Ms. Priya Berde and
Ms. Shruja Prabhudesai were the chief guests. The forum was held in
Marathi and Mrs. Sandhya Patwardhan, Medical Journalist compered the
forum.
CPAA's
Mrs. Phul Mathur was awarded the 'Seva Murti Puraskar' by the
Shri Seva Samrat Gunwant Baba Charate Pratishthan. Mrs. Mathur has
raised funds for CPAA's activities for the last 20 years, ensuring that
needy patients received the treatment they could not otherwise afford.
She is responsible for raising funds for the redevelopment of CPAA's
Smt. Panadevi Dalmia Cancer Management Centre at Mahalaxmi as well as
the Suman Ramesh Tulsiani Cancer Detection & Rehabilitation Centre at
Prabhadevi. We congratulate her on this acknowledgement of her selfless
work.
CPAA’s Dr. Shubha
Maudgal was invited to make a presentation on the benefits of CPAA's
'Psycho Oncology for Volunteers and Caretakers' training programme on
20th December at Cancer Care India's Annual General Body Meeting in
Ahmadabad.
Christmas
Celebration: Christmas came with a wave of parties for our childhood
cancer patients. The first one was organised by the Orange Business
Services on the 16th December at their office center. They
had organised a magic show and games for the children and a goody bag
full of gifts. On 17th December, employees of the Hotel
Novetel organized a party for a different group of children. The
children spent the evening decorating the Christmas tree. The movie '3
Idiots' was screened especially for them. This was followed by a visit
by Santa who played with the excited children and distributed gifts to
them. On 23rd December, 60 children and their parents were
invited for a party at Rosemary & Thyme. Dr. Mukund Aparajit has
consistently supported CPAA in many endeavours including training
parents in baking and catering at his facility at Rosemary & Thyme. The
children witnessed an entertaining show with magic, games, prizes and a
lot of singing and dancing. The evening ended on a sweet note with Dr.
Kiran Kalel distributing a cake that he had brought for the occasion.
Students of HR College came to CPAA to sing some Christmas carols on
24th December. They also played with the children and distributed
gifts to them.
On 18th December, Mrs.Vaishali Irani of Vaishali Nrityaniketan Thane
organized a wonderful evening of dance and music in aid of CPAA. The
proceeds of this show, Rs. 1 Lakh, were donated towards the care of our
patients.

Diwali festivities:
One of CPAA's patrons organised a heartwarming Diwali celebration at her
farmhouse in Gurgaon. The patients enthusiastically participated in
activities like clay pot painting, hoopla game, tattoos, candy floss,
bouncers, musical chair and passing the parcel organised for them. The
highlight of the evening was the firework display after a delicious
feast laid out for them. The children were presented video games.

Christmas
Celebration: Christmas 2010 began with lots of enthusiasm and fun at
the AIIMS Pediatric Ward on 21st December. The children and the
staff came together and decorated the playroom and the ward. They were
overjoyed to be a part of the celebration. One of our adopted cancer
patient dressed up as Santa Claus and merrily distributed candies to all
the children. Cup cakes, patties, juices, sweets, chocolates, caps and
blankets were distributed to 100 patients. The next party was at the
Millennium School, where the students warmly welcomed 35 childhood
cancer patients into their school. A cultural program was especially put
together for them. Delicious snacks and gifts were distributed after the
program. Sonu, a young patient, sang a Christmas carol and a Hindi song
for everyone.
CPAA
held its first Psyco-Oncology Volunteers Training Programme in
Gurgaon from 1st – 3rd December. The programme was ably organised by
Smita Khante, Sabeeha Shah and Hamsini Shivakumar. CPAA will
organise many more such programmes on a regular basis in future. This
programme gives people with a non-medical background an insight into
cancer and cancer care before becoming counselors at various hospitals.
CPAA Delhi's Mrs. Sudha
Murgai and Mrs. Neelima Batra too attended this workshop conducted by
Dr. Shubha Maudgal and Ms. Susmita Mitra from the Mumbai Head office.
Certificates were presented to the participants after the completion of
the workshop.

Diwali festivities:
A special programme was organised to entertain cancer patients on the
occasion of Diwali at the Command Hospital on 7th November. It
was attended by about 50 patients. Competitive games were played and
prizes were given to the winners. This was followed by snacks and
distribution of gifts to the patients. The Oasis Hotel also
hosted a Diwali party featuring mimicry and musical programme to
entertain cancer patients. The hotel sponsored a delicious lunch
thereafter. CPAA Pune participated in a Diwali sale for NGOs at
Emcure Pharmaceuticals. They exhibited and sold products like Diyas,
Jute bags and stationary items made by cancer patients.
Christmas
Celebration: 75 young and old cancer patients were invited to the
restaurant Malaka Spice to celebrate Christmas. They enjoyed
various games and sang popular Christmas carols. Santa Clause was on
hand to distribute chocolates to the patients. It has been an especially
chilly winter. A kind donor provided shawls as a Christmas gift to the
patients. The entertainment was followed by exotic Thai Snacks. |

Detection, Patient Care, Rehabilitation, Palliative Care and Total
Management of Cancer on local TV in Marathi starting February 4th,
2011.
