World No Tobacco Day 2004

Tobacco & Poverty

May 31st has been designated "World No Tobacco Day" by the World Health Organisation (WHO). This year's theme was "Tobacco and Poverty". CPAA organised 11 ENT camps at various sites in Mumbai, screening individuals for early signs of oral cancer due to tobacco abuse. On May 31st a free ENT Cancer Screening camp was conducted at Hutatma Chowk for the general public where over 800 individuals were screened.

A drawing competition was organised at Cirkus Cirkus attended by 125 street children, who epitomise the connection between poverty and tobacco addiction as the most vulnerable victims. Film star Arshad Warsi acted as judge for the competition.

A "Tobacco Control and Cessation" workshop for General Practitioners on 30th May was attended by over 50 doctors. The programme included talks and a role play session.

The NGO "Umang" put up a street play on the dangers of tobacco addiction which was very well received.
