May
31st has been designated "World No Tobacco Day" by the World Health
Organisation (WHO). This year's theme was "Tobacco and Poverty".
CPAA organised 11 ENT camps at various sites in Mumbai, screening
individuals for early signs of oral cancer due to tobacco abuse.
On May 31st a free ENT Cancer
Screening camp was conducted at Hutatma Chowk for the general
public where over 800 individuals were screened.
A
drawing competition was organised at Cirkus Cirkus attended by
125 street children, who epitomise the connection between poverty
and tobacco addiction as the most vulnerable victims. Film star
Arshad Warsi acted as judge for the competition.
A
"Tobacco Control and Cessation" workshop for General
Practitioners on 30th May was attended by over 50 doctors.
The programme included talks and a role play session.
The
NGO "Umang" put up a street play on the dangers of tobacco
addiction which was very well received.
