NEWS Newsletter Report
for the Period January-April 2004 With New Year it was
the annual meet time held on the 24th January 2004 at the head
office in Mumbai for all the branches. Each branch presented its report of
the work done in the previous year. The meet started with Delhi branch
report. Our branch saw an increase in almost all the activities during the year 2003. A total of 1027 patients were helped for chemotherapy as against 763 in the year 2002.Under “Adopt A Patient Scheme” 7 new patients were assisted. A total of 15 awareness lectures and 11 health check-up camps were done. A unique campaign was initiated on the occasion of WNTD called the Yellow Ribbon Campaign, chosen to represent the colour of stains left due to Tobacco smoking. The highlight of the year was visit to the prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s residence by our patients on the occasion of Rose Day. He gave the first rose to the patients and marked the inauguration of the annual event. On the 22nd Sep 100 patients were taken for an aeroplane ride organized by Alliance Air. A special show of “Kuch na Kaho” was held at PVR Cinema. On the Children’s day the patients were shown “Koi Mil Gaya”. Fun day was organized at Essex Farms where Abhay Goyle enthralled the patients by playing old Hindi numbers on his piano. Sushma Seth took 30 patients for a special screening of “Kal Ho Na Ho.” Shovana Narayan a well known dancer entertained 200 patients at Pragati Maidan during India International Trade Fair. A Christmas party was organized by Vidya Niketan School for the patients. Shobha De specially flew from Mumbai to attend our successful fashion show by designer Payal Jain. We continue to raise sizeable funds from the donation boxes and selling old newspapers and magazines collected from residential localities and offices. Department
Reports Awareness Lectures: On 20th January awareness lecture about Ill Effects of Tobacco was organized for about 100-125 people for the factory workers of Okhla. Another lecture on the same topic was organized on the 31st Jan for about 50 men workers of a factory in Okhla. On 5th February awareness lecture about Anti Tobacco was organized at Monica Garments for about 125-150 workers. On the 12th February awareness lecture was organized at SOS Village Faridabad at the Mother’s Training Institute for about 20-25 women who had come to attend training from various parts of the country. On the occasion of International Women’s Day on the 8th March an awareness lecture was conducted about Various Cancer’s in Women. Prevention and Early Detection: A health check –up camp was organized at Satnam Public School, Sangam Vihar on the 14th February in association with Delhi Common Wealth Women Association. It was sponsored by ONGC. Leading doctors from Apollo and Moolchand hospitals screened about 283 people on this occasion. People Screened: 17 men, 85 women and 181 children were screened. 27 pap smear tests were carried out and all tests were found to be clear. Pfizer donated 5 boxes of Gelusil Tablets. Each box containing 56 strips and each strip containing 8 tablets. They also donated 80 bottles of Benadyrl cough syrup. Another camp was organized for the villagers adopted by SNS foundation sponsored by GE Elfun on the 13th March 2004. 300 girls and 43 women were screened. 14 pap smears tests were conducted which were all clear. German Remedies, Torrent Pharmaceuticals and Modi Mundi Pharma donated the medicines for this camp. Patient Care Department: 160 patients were
provided assistance in AIIMS, 60 in Safdarjung and 59 in LNJP hospitals
during this period.
Play Group Activities Our playgroup or Bachho ki phulwari is successfully running for past 4 years at Rajgarhia Dharamshala every Thursday evening. An outing to Qutab Minar was arranged for the children of playgroup on 19th February. Phulwari at OPD at AIIMS has been restarted. Every Monday and Wednesday our social worker spends valuable time with these children. CPPA Delhi has started

Women Achiever’s Show On 3rd April 2004 CPAA Delhi organized its second women achievers show at the Hyatt Regency New Delhi. The first one was organized in August 2001. It was a show with a difference where thirty women who have excelled in their areas of expertise walked on the ramp for a noble cause. The show is the brainchild of Fashion Designer Shaina N.C of Golden Thimble Mumbai whose beautiful collection was a great hit. Famous choreographer Hemant Trivedi choreographed the show. The Women Achievers of this year included Noted Actress Sushma Seth, T.V personality Nalini Singh, Restaurateur Ritu Dalmia, Odissi Dancer Kiran Segal, New Reader Nidhi Kulpati to name a few. Padamshree Zohra Segal, Padma Bhushan Radha Reddy, Padma Shree Rita Ganguly, Noted Social Activist Mohini Giri and Journalist Sabina Sehgal Saikia were the Women Achievers who were honored on the stage. Also present to grace the occasion were Jyotiaditya Scindia along with his wife, Former Minister Mr. Vasant Sathe, Journalist Vir Sanghvhi and Femina Miss India 2004 Tanushree Dutta. Report for the Period May to August 2004 The month of May was marked at Cancer Patients Aid Association as World No Tobacco Month and celebrated through a unique campaign called The Yellow Ribbon Campaign. This campaign was initiated with an awareness lecture in Delhi University and was followed by awareness drives in corporate offices and Hotels where the employees as well as guests were pinned with yellow ribbons, yellow colour signifying the stains caused due to tobacco usage. Each person was given a handout talking about the ill effects of tobacco. Several individuals pledged to try to quit smoking while others swore they would stay off Tobacco at least for the day. Everyone was requested to make their contribution towards the cause and many people came forward to put in their bit. The order of the events were as follows: Max Health Care Centre-5th May The
Yellow Ribbon campaign began on 5th May at Max Health Care
Center’s at Panchsheel and Greater Kailash. We
carried forward this campaign to GE Capital offices where the GE
Elfun volunteers helped us spread
the awareness message to the employees across 5 GE offices. Here
with the help of student volunteers from Vidya Niketan School, Saket we
targeted the employees from Coca-Cola, American Express Bank, Reckitt
and Benkizer , Bausch and Laumb as well as other offices. Our volunteers and staff members put in their efforts towards enlightening the employees of the hotel about the ill effects of tobacco and motivating them towards contributing for the poor patients. Ambassador

27th May 2004 Next in the series were the offices of Hutch here our volunteers disseminated awareness at the café where the employees of the office came for relaxation and took out some time to put in their bit for helping cancer patients. Nikko
Hotel- 28th May 2004 The last of the campaigns before the grand finale was organized at the Nikko Hotel. Health Check-up Camp- Hermann Gmeinner Medical Centre, Faridabad A
Health Check Up camp was organized for the villagers of Anangpur Village
in association with Hermann Gmeinner Medical Centre Anangpur, Faridabad
on the 30th May 2004. Elli Lilly India Pvt. Ltd. sponsored
the camp.Dr. Rashmi Sharma, Oncology Surgeon,Moolchand Hospital;Dr.
Pawan Gupta,Oncology Surgeon Dharamshila Hospital; Dr. Jay Laxmi,
Radiation Oncologist Anand Hospital screened 81 women and 24
men and 16 pap smear tests were carried out of which 3 required follow
up. THE
FINALE The
finale of our WNTD programme was held at one of Delhi’s most happening
places ‘Dilli Haat’on 31st May 2004. Our staff
members along with the volunteers pinned up Yellow Ribbon Badges on the
lapels of public along with distributing awareness leaflets about Ill
effects of Tobacco Usage. The
Highlights of the programme were a street play and a puppet
show organized in association with the Ministry of Information and
Broadcasting-song and drama division. These events caught the attention
of the public at large and were very beneficial in putting across our
message: “Our World Tobacco Free World”. GECIS
Hyderabad Seeing
the success of our Yellow Ribbon campaign in its branch office in Gurgaon,
GECIS Hyderabad wanted us to organize this campaign in their office. We
helped them in conducting the same. The programme was aimed at creating
awareness about the harmful effects of using tobacco in any form and to
generate support for tobacco free world. A lecture on stress management and life style by Dr.Shekhar Reddy, distribution of Yellow Ribbons in support of Tobacco Free World and Free Lung Check-up at the medical room were undertaken. Patient Care Department: 171 patients at AIIMS, 144 patients at Safdarjung and 56 patients at LNJP hospitals were provided assistance during the period May-August 2004. In the month of August we adopted two patients viz: Rohan a child of 13 years suffering from Hodgkins disease and Mrs. Shubha Mishra, suffering from non-small cell lung cancer. We have received a very good response to our appeals for assistance for these patients and we have begun providing aid in the form of medicines for the complete treatment of these individuals. Awareness Department: In the months of July
and August as soon as the Schools reopened after Summer Break our
Awareness Department endeavored towards sensitization of School
students regarding the ill effects of Tobacco. Here we put in our
effort to help children make a wise decision about making tobacco use a
habit or being smart by not starting at all. Dr. Pawan Gupta, Oncologist
Surgeon has helped us conduct these sessions in: Play Group Activities Our Phulwari is successfully running for past few years at Rajgarhia Dharamshala and at the OPD at AIIMS, here our social worker spends quality time with the children. Apart from conduction of regular play activities our Projects Department organized a Special screening of Spiderman 2 for the patients. We express our heart
