Due to the pressures of every day work, organisations find it hard to stop and take stock of where they are vis-à-vis their goals. CPAA is no exception, and we are often unaware of the achievements of our co-workers. Recently, we took time to present the triumphs of 2002 for the benefit of our colleagues. Given below is a summary of the annual reports of our divisions as presented during the review meeting held on January 25th.
Iva Athavia presented the Annual Report for the Patient Care department on behalf of Mrunal Marathe, Vinaya Chacko, Halima Aurangabadkar, Sonali Panvelkar, Oven and Pandu. We registered 349 new patients, 122 adult males, 117 adult females, 63 male children and 47 female children. 66 of our patients expired during the period. 146 home and hospital visits were made. Rs.28.4 lakhs were disbursed including Rs.24.3 lakhs in medical aid. Rs.7.1 lakhs were used under the Adopt-a-Cancer-Patient scheme. Rs.14.41 lakhs were donated to leukemia patients. Halima Aurangabadkar aided and counseled over 6700 patients at Tata Memorial Hospital during the year. 200kgs of sugar, 35 cartons of cooking oil, 3 cartons of apples, 19 boxes of Resource, 15 boxes of Horlicks, toys, clothes, biscuits and umbrellas were given to the needy. Jennifer Quadros helped over 12,000 patients at the Private OPD counter of TMH. Iva Athavia assisted 766 patients at Nair Hospital and 598 at Cama & Albless Radiation departments. Mrunal Marathe counseled 241 patients in TMH Palliative Care Unit. At the playgroup for children at Ernest Borges home, Alka Kapadia arranged four movie shows, including the favourite, "Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham". Women's Day, Rakhi, Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali and Christmas were celebrated and three outings were organised including a tea party at the Chief Minister's bungalow and a Fantasy Flight on Jet Airways. Ms Manju Gupta of the Rehabilitation Centre presented the annual report on behalf of her team. The Rehabilitation Centre's activities include manufacture of Books and Boxes, Wax diyas and statues, Paper and jute bags, Stationary, T-shirts and linen. Patients are taught tailoring, embroidery and screen printing on paper and fabric. 967 patients and their relatives were given employment during the year. 2532 persons availed of the rations donated by the Food Bank. 960 persons used conveyance facility, 143 cases of mastectomy were fitted with breast prostheses, 200 patients were given medical aid and 15 children were given education allowance. The financial expenditure incurred by the centre was Rs.52.9 lakhs of which Rs.15.8 lakhs went towards patient stipend; Rs.3.2 lakhs for food grains; Rs.2.1 lakhs for conveyance. Shubha Maudgal presented the annual report for CPAA's website, www.cpaaindia.org. The website now has a mailing list of 879 people. 991 emails were received during 2002 from 19 Indian states including Chhatisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh and Goa and 27 countries including Azerbaijan, Qatar and Ukraine. Drs. S.H. Advani, L.J. DeSouza, V. Srinivasan, P. Parikh (India), K. Bakri and A. Sarnaik (US) gave second opinions for patients who wrote in to us. Breast prostheses were sent to Bangalore and New Delhi in response to orders placed online. Patients were put in touch with doctors or counselors residing in their area. Dr. Maudgal also introduced the volunteers counseling patients at Tata Memorial Hospital. Gauri Salvi, Susmita Mitra, Indu Nair, Padma Narayanan and Rati Dutta made presentations on their experiences. Alka Kapadia presented an overview of CPAA's achievements for the year. 31,129 persons were aided at all our centres and Rs. 63.5 lakhs were disbursed. 3,152 patients were given medical aid, 17,505 patients were counseled, 225 patient visits were made. 150 patients availed of our ambulance facilities, 3,120 used the shuttle service between Dadar Station and Tata Memorial Hospital. The Diagnostics department showed a sustained increase in number of people screened. Their success in detecting cancer among apparently healthy individuals is indeed creditable. This year, 1266 persons were enrolled in the CIP and claims amounting to Rs. 13.1 lakhs were cleared. Our state-of-the-art detection centre at Naigaon screened 4,722 persons. 8,344 pathological investigations were carried out, including 493 mammograms, 679 X-rays, 1,504 ultra-sonographies and 38 ECGs. 50 awareness lectures were held during the year. The Rehabilitation Centre had another bumper year earning over Rs.15 lakhs through sale of diyas during Diwali alone. Mr. Y. K. Sapru concluded the session by commending each person's contribution and exhorting them to continue to perform with sympathy and feeling to those less fortunate. None of the work presented would have been possible without the dedicated efforts of the team of Fund Raisers, Indira Gurtu, Phul Mathur, Shailja Singh, Zakia Topiwala, Rekha Bilandani and Kavita Kulkarni. The work of Mrs. Zainab Allana and her group consisting of Mrs. Sushila Sawant, Mrs. Swati Kulkarni, Mrs. Jyotsna Sawant, Ms. Rouhie Matani, Mr. Laxmikant Naik, Mrs. Mani Irani and Ms. Sunita Sakpal was acknowledged. Administration plays an invaluable role in the smooth running of the organisation. The hard work of Gulshan, Jayshree, Avira and Victoria at Mahalaxmi and Medha and Josephine at Malhotra House was commended. The leadership of CPAA Secretary Silloo Jasdanwala and Joint Secretary Rekha Sapru was praised. Mr. Sapru ended by complimenting the working of all employees who successfully pull together as a team. Neeta More conducted awareness lectures at Jan Kalyan Samitee, Mulund for community Social Workers, for paramedical social workers gathered from all over the country at Nirmal Niketan, Goregaon during December and the villagers at Panvel organised by Kushtarog Niwaran Samiti in January. Alka Kapadia conducted an awareness lecture at the Dongri Observatory Home. Mrunal Marathe spoke about female cancers at the Brahman Sangh. Prevention and Early Detection 23 camps and OPDs were held during the month of December and 29 during the month of January. Camps were held at Godrej (6); HDFC Bank (4); Films Division, MTNL, Goregaon, SS Jairamdas Sansthan, Atma Jyot Charitable Trust, St. John the Evangelist Church, Inner Wheel Club of Bombay Dahisar, Rotary Club of Bombay, Andheri East and Community Outreach Programme (2 each); DSP Merril Lynch (1).
A total of 701 people, 324 males and 377 females were screened in the camps and clinics in December and 780 people, 269 males and 511 females in January. 386 people were advised follow up. 12 OPDs and clinics were held during December and 16 during January. 276 males and 447 females were screened. 194 people were advised follow up. 7 cases
of cancer were detected. Three cases of breast cancer were detected in
a 59 year-old, a 45 year-old and a 43 year-old woman. The last-mentioned
lady is undergoing chemotherapy at Bombay Hospital after radical mastectomy.
The former two are undergoing treatment at Tata Memorial Hospital. A 53
year-old woman was detected with cancer of the cervix and is undergoing
treatment at TMH. A 50 year-old lady was detected with Chronic Lymphocytic
Leukemia, a kind of blood cancer at a camp held at Maheshwari Pragati
Mandal. Two men, a 60 year-old and a 45 year-old were detected with bronchogenic
CA and cancer of the epiglottis respectively. Both are being given treatment
at TMH. Smt. Lila Kishanchand Shahani Clinical Diagnostic Centre The Smt. Lila Kishanchand Shahani Clinical Diagnostic Centre screened 373 persons during December and 295 persons during January. 1483 tests were performed, out of which 1166 were pathology tests. 253 sonography, 82 x-ray and 77 mammography investigations were carried out. 7 ECG investigations were carried out. 168 patients were screened in the OPDs. During December, 167 people were examined, of whom 88 had come for the first check-up and 79 for renewal check up. During January 135 people were examined, out of whom 58 had come for the first check-up and 77 for renewal check-up. 2 claims were settled and an amount of Rs. 41,824 was disbursed. 134 claims have been settled to date. In January, a 68-year-old lady policyholder was detected with esophageal cancer. She is undergoing treatment under Dr. Raman Deshpande, surgeon and Dr. R. Gopal, medical oncologist at Breach Candy and Cumballa Hill Hospitals. As of the end of December, 2002, CPAA discontinued the whole life version of the Cancer Insurance policy. The increased number of new registrations during December and January reflect the popularity of the scheme as people rushed to join before the scheme was stopped. The comprehensive scheme now available runs for 20 years. Existing policyholders will continue to get the benefit of the earlier scheme.
At Smt. Panadevi Dalmia Cancer Management Centre 719 patients and 804 patients were aided, counseled and given guidance at our locations in Mumbai-Srimati Panadevi Dalmia Cancer Management Centre; at Nair Hospital Radiation Centre; Cama & Albless, Wadia and Tata Memorial Hospitals during December and January respectively. Over 900 patients availed of ambulance facilities, including 16 patients who availed of the stretcher service for long distances. 150 persons were given clothes, 90 packets of biscuits and 85 boxes of Complan, Bournvita and Feredol were distributed. 25 home and institutional visits were made. 12 of our patients expired during the two months. Christmas was celebrated with Halima playing Santa Claus at TMH. 35 radios, 25 dolls games and cards were distributed on the 24th for the children to open on the 25th. Mrs. Manju Bhargava donated blankets for Sankranti, Mrs. Rati Datta donated food items and Mr. Weling donated clothes for distribution among the poor cancer patients. Ustad
Zakir Husain visited the centre and took time off to play with children
and cheered them up with his jokes. He performed at a programme along
with Ustad Sultan Khan and Fazal Qureshi at Rang Bhavan on 16th January
for the benefit of CPAA. We would like to thank our sponsors for their
generous donations, which made the programme possible. PATIENT CARE AND REHABILITATION (SUMMARY)
At Tata Memorial Hospital: Room No. 189, Golden Jubilee Block 267 patients and 498 patients were aided, guided and counseled by CPAA's Halima Aurangabadkar at Tata Memorial Hospital's Golden Jubilee Block Room No. 189 during December and January respectively. 800 packets of biscuits were distributed. 95 patients were given clothes, 16 kgs of sweets were distributed. 19 referred cases were helped. 33 ward visits and 19 home visits were made. 42 patients were given medicines and toys were distributed to 95 children. 442 patients were given Complan and Horlicks. 909 patients utilized the ambulance facility including 885 who used the shuttle service between TMH and Dadar station. 3 cartons of apples and 6 cartons of cooking oil were distributed. "Can I Help You?" CPAA’s Desk at Tata Memorial Hospital’s Private OPD Jennifer Quadros helped 1124 patients during December and 1425 patients during January, providing literature on various kinds of cancers to 662 patients and their family members, helping 419 in filling up registration and other forms and answering questions about the hospital for 1220 persons. 52 ward visits were made. 196 patients were counseled. Palliative Care Unit at Tata Memorial Hospital CPAA's Mrunal Marathe counseled 15 patients, 10 males and 5 females during the month of January. There were 7 cases of head and neck, 1 of abdomen, 3 of cervical cancer and 4 miscellaneous cases. Mrunal counseled the brother of a terminally ill cancer patient. The four brothers had lost their parents at an early age and it fell upon the eldest brother to act the part of parents, not marrying since he did not want to divert his attention from what he considered his primary responsibility. Finally, his siblings were settled and he could look forward to a happy old age, but it was not to be. One of the brothers was found to have cancer. The eldest brother was grief stricken and said, "I did everything within my powers for my brothers, expecting only that they would do my final rites like sons. Now I find that my beloved brother is on his deathbed and I am taking care of him. Please help me to die and save him." Counseling at Tata Memorial Hospital CPAA volunteers counsel patients at Tata Memorial Hospital, covering the Radiation Departments in the Main Building and the Annexe; the Breast Cancer surgical wards. Gauri Salvi, Susmita Mitra, Indu Nair and Rati Dutta counsel in Marathi, Hindi, Gujrati, Bengali and English. At Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children 51 new patients each were registered during the months of December and January. 814 patients attended follow up of whom 109 patients are undergoing chemotherapy. 55 patients were counseled and given guidance and Vinaya Chacko visited 10 patients in the wards. 8 group meetings were held. 45 patients were given packets of Complan, 60 persons were given biscuits and 60 patients were given cooking oil. 25 sets of clothes were distributed. Counseling at Cama & Albless Hospital Cancer Ward 64 patients were counseled and given guidance by Iva Athavia during December and 56 patients during January. 95 ward visits were made. 41 patients were provided guidance regarding alternative therapy. 17 patients were provided ambulance service. 9 terminally ill patients were referred to Shanti Avedana Ashram. Rs. 13,124 was donated towards medicines and radiation costs. 4 packets of chocolates, 32 packets of biscuits and 55 litres of oil and 25 sets of clothes were distributed among the patients. Nair Hospital (Radiation Department) 53 patients were counseled and given guidance at the Counseling Cell at Nair Hospital Radiation Department by Iva Athavia during December and 84 patients during January. 40 ward visits were made. 13 terminally ill patients were referred to Shanti Avedana Ashram. 29 patients were given information about alternative forms of medicines. Rs. 45,586 was donated towards radiation treatment. 113 packets of biscuits and sweets, 75 bottles of Feredol and 10 packets of chocolates were distributed. 25 patients were given clothes. 55 litres of cooking oil was distributed. Counseling at Bharat Sevashram Sangh Iva Athavia counsels patients at Bharat Sevashram Sangh, Vashi every Friday evening. The home has been started for the benefit of out station patients. A bus has been provided for transportation of patients to TMH. Iva started the work at the behest of Swami Prashantonandji Maharaj who takes keen interest. 34 patients were counseled and guided during January, 16 patients were visited in their rooms. 5 patients were given guidance regarding alternative therapy. 9 group meetings attended by 7-8 patients were held regarding hygiene and diet. 40 bottles of Feredol and 30 litres of cooking oil were distributed. CPAA also arranged for a new Aquaguard water cooler and filter at the home. The Rehabilitation Centre adopted seven new patients during December and January. A total of 148 patients were given assistance. 12 cases of mastectomy were attended and breast prostheses were provided. 411 patients were given rations worth Rs.51,877. Rs.33,670 was spent on teachers' salaries, for patient education and vocational training. Rs.2.73 lakh was spent on patients' wages and Rs. 41,742 was spent on welfare activities, conveyance and diet supplements during the two months. Cancer Patients Aid Association is grieved to have to report the tragic demise of family members of our colleagues, Jennifer Quadros and Victoria Santos. Jennifer lost her 8 year-old son, Brandon on 9th February and Victoria's husband, Dilip passed away on 24th February. The sudden untimely deaths have left all of us at CPAA shocked and saddened. We pray that the family members find the strength to cope with this terrible loss. Cancer
